Castelo de São Jorge_architectural site-seeing!
While in Lisbon, THE must-destination, in my opinion, would have to be the castle Sao Jorge. The walk up to it is already a pleasure, wandering through the small streets, winding up towards the high point of Lisbon where the old castle offers panoramic views over the entire city. The view over the warm, red roofs of the buildings on to the river beyond is breath-taking. The atmosphere within the castle compound is quiet and serene. If you wander a little further behind the grey castle, you will get to an archeological site, for which architectural practice JLCG Aquitectos has designed the site and the white building. The walls hover over the original foundation, sensibly raising awareness of what was once originally on the site: the remnants of the first recorded human civilization and occupation in Lisbon. The historical stone in combination with the added white of the building and corten steel railings along the path towards the site makes for a nice architectural tour. The only thing that kept bothering me, were the obnoxiously looking security ropes in front of some passages. They really destroyed the carefully crafted architectural setting. But hey, that´s just me observing with a very picky architectural eye. (lot´s of "architectural" stuff going on here...) Take a look on the architectural review´s site for some plans and sections and some more photos.
